President Uhuru Kenyatta has awarded a barman who used to serve him when he was a member of parliament. Mr. Kenyatta who is known to drink hard liquor and smoke every now and then remembered the man who took care of his drinking needs often while in Kenya parliament.
Andrew Gicheha was, on Tuesday, April 19, delighted to receive Head of State Commendation for his outstanding work at the parliament pub.
“I am really happy for being recognised for the number of years I have worked here. There are others who have served but they did not get any recognition. I did not expect it. I was just called to come get it,” said Gicheha as quoted by Daily Nation.
The 57-year-old retired in 2014 after serving in parliament for 33 years. He started as a waiter and first as a waiter in the restaurant and later became a barman.
The award was presented to him by Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro.
He said some of his favourite patrons were Uhuru, former president Mwai Kibaki and the late John Michuki.
“I served President Kibaki when he was here and today if we meet he would not have to be reminded who I am. He knows me by name. President Kenyatta was my MP. We come from the same location. He also knows me very well,” he told Daily Nation.
The state commendations are usually awarded by the president upon recommendation by the National Honours and Awards Committee.
Other state awards and honours in Kenya are: Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya, Order of the Burning Spear, Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya, Distinguished Conduct Order, Distinguished Service Medal and Silver Star of Kenya.
