Kenya’s missions and embassies abroad have lost Sh767 million collected from visas, consular fees and rental charges, according to an audit report on the Foreign Affairs ministry. However, the figure is just an estimation, states Auditor General Edward Ouko’s report for year ended June 2015, which indicates the exact figures cannot be given due to loss of visa stickers and unauthorised refunds.
The ministry collected a total of Sh13.6 billion during 2014-15 financial year. Revenue records cited indicate Sh285.5 million was collected but only Sh214.5 million is recorded as actual revenue. “In diligence check of four missions/embassies, audit reveals massive loss of revenue totaling Sh137, 718,518. At London Sh82,369,012 ;Rome Sh47,434,515 ; Addis Ababa Sh6,316,584 and Washington DC Sh1,598,407 during financial year 2013-14,” states the report.
