Cord leader Raila Odinga yesterday said President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto want to silence social media critics through intimidation.
He said the government is crafting laws that favour the regime of the day so that people using social media do not have a platform to oppose bad governance.
“They have compromised the print and electronic media. Now they want to tame the social media so that people can continue looting public funds, abusing human rights and failing to deliver,” Raila said.
He asked the President and the DP to unite the country and stop amending laws that continue to mess the economy.
The opposition leader warned it was a waste of resources and time to change the laws in a bid to shield impunity against senior government officials, as well as historical injustices causing suffering to Kenyans.
“I have been insulted many times than Uhuru and Ruto. I should be the one complaining. People have called me many names and blackmailed me many times, yet am not running here and there to protest,” Raila said.
He said leaders should accept criticism to learn from their mistakes.
“The other day, I saw the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko, Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery and National Cohesion and Integration Commission chairman Francis ole Kaparo waste time discussing hate crime,” Raila said.
“There is nothing like hate crime and these are the people who should sit down and ensure Kenyans have better services and the democracy we fought for.”
Raila said changing laws would not stop Kenyans from protesting and demanding for equal rights from the government.
“It is clear Kenyans are not getting good services, because a few people are looting. Tribalism and nepotism are rampant in the government and the cost of living is going up,” he said.
Raila spoke speaking after receiving members of the Maa community at the ODM headquarters. The team led by former Information PS Tiampati ole Musuni asked Raila to help them call for justice over historical injustices.
The ODM leaders are planning to hold a rally in Narok to make the declaration as a community.
In Kenya part of the problem why community policing failed is because we have thugs doing illegal things. You can’t control crime when you commit crime while handling criminals. It will be a circus. You need to have higher ideals and restraints if you want to handle such. We must build institutions to reign in on the menace but not leave it to individuals who become complainants, prosecutors, police and judges all rolled into one.
Further, President Uhuru Kenyatta should not be allowed to reign in on Opposition leaders using Euro-bond embezzlement to weaken the opposition in Kenya and then turn around to reign in on his critics. That is not democracy and we should not allow such underhanded methods to go unchallenged in Kenya!.
